Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac has confirmed that it will open a new gallery in London in Spring 2017, adding to its existing spaces in Salzburg and Paris. The new gallery, led by Polly Robinson Gaer, will be located at the historic Ely House on Dover Street in Mayfair, occupying more than 1,500 square meters over five floors. The 18th-century mansion, designed in 1772 by the English architect Sir Robert Taylor for Bishop Edmund Keene of Ely, will be renovated to accommodate the gallery by New York-based architect Annabelle Selldorf, Principal of Selldorf Architects.Following the announcement, Thaddaeus Ropac said that despite the result of the recent EU referendum in the UK, he has no doubt that London will continue to be one of the world’s most quintessential and vibrant art centers.“We are looking forward to presenting carefully curated exhibitions featuring historical works and exhibitions by established and emerging artists who do not currently have gallery representation in London,” said Ropac.“I am excited to be working with Annabelle Selldorf on the redesign of this beautiful building, and I am confident she will create an innovative contemporary exhibition space whilst remaining true to the building’s historical features.”Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac was founded in 1983 and currently operates from two locations in Salzburg and two in Paris. The gallery represents around 60 artists and participates in all major international art fairs.
