British-Mexican photographer Alinka Echeverría’s “Nicephora” will be showcased at the Rencontres d'Arles festival of photography from July 4 through August 30 in Arles, France. The photographer’s contemporary and analytical approach to examining the male and colonial gaze in the imagery of women is central to the exhibition.Echeverría was influenced by the works of French inventor Nicéphore Niépce, who is considered the founder of photography, and she extensively researched Niépce's desire to capture, fix, and reproduce images. Echeverría also explored colonial images of women and questioned whether technological advances of photographic apparatus and printing methods had in any way altered the process of Othering, and the subsequent assimilation and influence of the contemporary gaze.Echeverría uses the vase as a symbol of the feminine, creating works that reflect on how we have been conditioned to read the images of women through visual codes and photographic techniques.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition.
