New York-based Lithuanian artist Žilvinas Kempinas’s solo exhibition will run from September 23 through November 27 at the Ikon Gallery, in Birmingham. On display will be a number of installations representing such natural phenomena as light and the circulation of air, with an emphasis on movement made by both visitors and the show's kinetic works. The artist is known for his use of everyday objects, especially unwound videotapes, and for shifting viewpoints to create tension between first impressions and reality. His "White Noise" (2007), consisting of videotape stretched wall-to-wall, embodies his resistance to the idea of self-contained, discrete artistic experience. At the beginning of the exhibition will be a new installation made especially for Ikon. An upside-down video projection of a ride through forested landscapes, it creates a controlled environment in which the effects of the viewer’s movements are immediately disorienting. The artist plays a clever aesthetic game, sharing something that is wonderful and real at the same time.Click on the Slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
