Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) will host “Carmel Buckley and Mark Harris: Sparrow Come Back Home,” from December 6 through February 12, 2017 at the ICA Fox Reading Room in London.‘Sparrow Come Back Home’ is the title of a 1962 album by Calypso singer Mighty Sparrow (b. 1935). The exhibition will showcase Sparrow’s records alongside printed material related to his music. Artists Carmel Buckley and Mark Harris will create installations on 180 ceramic tiles in the approximate size of LPs, representing the front and back cover of Sparrow’s records. The images are made by firing photo decals onto the tiles, making permanent memorials of Sparrow’s work. The installation tiles will be presented along with an archive of photographs and literature that discuss calypso and the socio-political issues mentioned in Sparrow’s songs. The 1963 book of Sparrow’s lyrics ‘One Hundred and Twenty Calypsos to Remember’ and Gordon Rohlehr’s publication ‘Calypso & Society in Pre-Independent Trinidad’ will also be a part of the archive along with poetries by John Agard, Kamau Brathwaite and others.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition.
