Gagosian Paris is currently hosting a group show, titled “Lexicon.” It is on view through September 17.This is a show of text-based works. Since the beginning of the recorded history, language and art have crossed each other’s paths. And in modern era, artists have put words and language to diverse effects, using writing as both an act and subject — in print, light, sculpture, and paint on canvas. Language and art have never lived too far from one another — concrete poetry, graffiti, propaganda and pop-art, among other genres are the testimony of their dynamic interplay over time. The exhibition presents a collection of examples from artists who have played with language and letter in such a way that the language has become a physical object. Works in the exhibition include Marcel Broodthaers's "Académie I," Alighiero Boetti's embroidered magic word squares "Arazzi," Ed Ruscha's large-scale three-part painting "A, B, C," Jenny Holzer's stone agit, "Selections from the Living Series (Bench #9)" among others.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition.
