The Serpentine Gallery opens for the fall with “An Autumn Lexicon,” an exhibition that features highlights from over four decades of the career of Marc Camille Chaimowicz. The exhibition runs from September 29 through November 20, alongside Turner Prize nominee Helen Marten’s show at the Serpentine Sackler. This showcase marks the latest chapter in a long story of collaboration between the gallery and Chaimowicz. Part of this story is retold through a restaging of the artist’s “Enough Tiranny,” 1972 — a room-sized installation reminiscent of the end of a party (perhaps the 1960s), complete with disco balls, lights, tinsel, glitter, a real fish pond with fish, and, in its present incarnation, a rocking soundtrack of 1970s hits, with the playlist heavily David Bowie-focused in tribute to the leading light of that era. The installation marks the passage of time through comparison, as what were then contemporary references to glam rock, the IRA (hence the misspelling of “tyranny”), and magazines such as the International Times now seem like time capsules. It also, however, shows the changing of time through updating: for example, the soundtrack to this exhibition is played on CDs, which were yet to be invented when this work was first staged; now an anachronism all on their own.Other rooms, meanwhile, take us on a brisk tour of the artist’s works since this landmark installation, exploring his interest in room interiors through artist-made furnishings, textiles, and wallpapers, as well as his preference for patterns and, particularly, marble. They also bring to light some notable departures for the artist, including the original designs for his “The World of Interiors” book and his second-ever mural.“Marc Camille Chaimowicz: An Autumn Lexicon” runs from September 29 through November 20.
