An exhibition by American painter Sam McKinniss, titled 'Egyptian Violet', is on view at the Team Gallery, New York, through November 12, 2016. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.'Egyptian Violet' features a collection of figurative paintings, each one depicting mutually symbiotic intimations of seduction, and dread, a concept positioned here as queer. McKinniss’ paintings follow a path that travels from sentimentality to downright morbid, from the celebratory to the debased. His works depict recognizable images often with a heightened sense of emotionality, lithe bodies sampled from a variety of sources. The title of the exhibition refers to an oil pigment that McKinniss uses in each of his paintings as it portrays multi-hued emotional resonances. The exhibition is on view at team Gallery, 83 Grand Street New York, NY 10013.
