Platform China is hosting “Downstage, Upstaged” by Song Yuanyuan through February 26, 2017.In this exhibition, Song builds upon the established themes from his earlier series “Examining Objects” that featured absurdly disfigured forms. His newer paintings incorporate realism thereby identifying strong emotions and narrative within them, especially in the “minor characters.” Song focuses on such minor characters and overlooked objects, which are considered downstage, and brings them upstage. Although Song makes use of fairy tales in order to better comprehend these insignificant objects, he also creates scenes with only minor characters, such as photos of empty stage, where the lack of context requires the viewers to draw from their imaginations and interpret the works through their own perspective. Throughout the duration of this exhibition, the works will be regularly rearranged and recombined to provide different storylines. The event is held at D07 Main 2nd Street, 798 Art District, No. 2 Jiuxianqiao Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing, China. For details, visit: http://platformchina.org/en Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the event.
