“Surfin’ USA,” an exhibition featuring the works of contemporary Colombian artist, Santiago Montoya (b. 1974) will run from January 9, through February 12, 2017, at Halcyon Gallery, London. The selection of works on display explores the socio-political issues and complex subject matters that Montoya depicts with an element of humor that in turn sparks conversation and debate. His artworks are created using paper currency, the artist cuts, alter, and stretch the bills to explore the meaning hidden behind the surface. He does so by using cliché titles and familiar imagery. Montoya’s multidisciplinary approach combines traditional painting, found objects, and video documentary. He uses the aesthetics of materials to imbue meaning in his artwork the resulting appearance and concept bearing equal weight. The artist uses pop vocabulary of Warhol and the aesthetics of popular culture such as Mickey Mouse and The Velvet Underground to draw attention to the social and financial crises that have taken place over the course of 2016.The exhibition is on view at the Halcyon Gallery, 144-146 New Bond Street, London W1S 2PF.
