de Sarthe Gallery presents Michal Martychowiec’s "Sous les pavés, la plage!” (Under the cobblestones, the beach!) at the gallery’s Hong Kong venue. It is Martychowiec’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. The title was one of the slogans used in France’s 1968 demonstrations. It expressed the desire that beneath the city which had been hardened by stone, there is the freedom of the beach (represented by the sand on which the paving stones were placed). The newly created significance of individual artworks and its symbolic functioning throughout the artist’s oeuvre both have to be considered. Michał Martychowiec (b. 1987) is a contemporary artist who is best known for creating conceptual series of photographs, films, drawings, neons, objects, and mix-media installations and environments. Some of the accreditations he has received include Distinction in MA Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London in 2011 and since then has been living in Berlin and London. Since the year 2007, he has been creating number of topical photographic series, as well as video projections and extensive installations using diverse media: photography, film, drawing, installation, neon and objects. Other recent exhibitions include "What remains the poets provide" at Art Museum of NUA | Nanjing. The exhibition is on view through September 9, 2017 at de Sarthe Gallery, 20/F, Global Trade Square, No. 21 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Hong Kong. For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/de-sarthe-gallery/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
