FP Contemporary in Culver City will present “1977 Onward,” a retrospective of Tom Lieber’s paintings, which were created between 1977 and 2017. Tom Lieber divides his time painting between Los Angeles and Kauai. He is among the artists whose abstract art has its own unique language. Lieber is originally from St. Louis but moved to Berkeley in 1975 after finishing his BFA and MFA at the University of Illinois. He rose to prominence in 1982 when a woman named Diane Waldman who was then deputy director at the Guggenheim Museum NY traveled to California. She was traveling the country in search of young artists she thought would be the next generation of talented emerging artists. And when all stars were in Lieber’s favor, Waldman chanced upon a book featuring 20 young painters from the Bay Area where Lieber was featured. Lieber revealed that she identified early that his paintings were structurally sound works and she understood them. Diane’s search culminated with an exhibition at the Guggenheim featuring Lieber and 10 other emerging artists in 1983. The Guggenheim acquired two paintings, one in 1983 and another in 1985. Lieber’s large and dramatic abstractions with black brushstrokes and loosely painted veils suggest an Asian landscape painting palette. John Berggruen, a well-established art dealer in San Francisco represented Lieber. The Metropolitan Museum, NY purchased a painting from his “Crocodile Period” from Berggruen. Marty Margulies, a major art collector based in Miami who collects the likes of Picasso, Rothko, etc., also fell in love with Lieber’s paintings and has seven of them in his collection. In 2000, Lieber moved to Kauai and continued painting works mostly influenced by the environment in Hawaii. The exhibition will be on view from September 9 through October 28, 2017 at 5835 Washington Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232.For details, visit: www.fpcontemporary.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
