Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), New York, is presenting an online exhibition of New York-based visual artist, Shinique Smith.Shinique Smith (b. 1971, Baltimore, MD) is inspired by the vast nature of ‘things’ that we consume and discard, which resonate on a personal and social scale. The Graffiti of her youth, Japanese calligraphy, and Abstraction are influences from which she extracts the graceful and spiritual qualities in written word and the everyday. Her works often use fabrics and other secondhand finds including toys and t-shirts. She mixes a lot of personal understanding of art in order to create her installations, paintings and sculptures. Her paintings blend neo-tribalism and Abstract Expressionism which draws amply on her formative experiences with dance which she learned when she was four, graffiti, Tibetan culture and fashion, fused with influences that range from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Japanese calligraphy.Raised by a single mother Vkara Phifer-Smith, a former fashion editor at Baltimore magazine, as a child Smith accompanied her mother to fashion shows, which probably also helped her develop a fashion aesthetic sense that she uses in her art today. In the current show BAM has collaborated with Smith where she has produced a limited edition print series featuring three unique, vibrant images. Produced in editions of 50, each archival inkjet print is signed and numbered by the artist. Prints are available for $1,200 each or $3,500 for all three. Proceeds benefit BAM’s artistic programming. The artworks will be available online at BAM website for a limited time period.
