Julie Saul Gallery, New York City, is hosting an exhibition, titled “The Elements of Style”, featuring the complete series of fifty-seven paintings from illustrator, author, product designer Maira Kalman’s lauded 2005 edition of the illustrated work by the same name. Kalman discovered the modest but revered reference compiled by William Strunk and E.B. White and known to generations of aspiring writers and English students at a used bookstore around 2002. She found it so amusing and subject to visual interpretation that it became her most beloved project to date. Of the many paintings that are strategically deployed throughout the book, there are many complex and almost always humorous relationships to the text. The images are accompanied only by their titles, where they frequently evoke very oblique New Yorker cartoons and are larger and more luscious than in the book. Kalman’s pairings range from the hilariously literal to the nearly abstract. Her images are almost invariably based, to some degree, on photographs — whether of art, events, accomplished people or famous monuments — sometimes taken by Kalman herself. The exhibition will be on view through September 16, 2017, at Julie Saul Gallery, 535 W 22nd St # 6F, New York, NY 10011.For details, visit: www.saulgallery.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
