Amy Li Gallery, Beijing is presenting works by Zhang Jian in the exhibition titled “Silky Beauty.”The exhibition comprises of recent artworks by Zhang Jian. This show marks the debut of his “Fold” series of paintings on silk as well as the debut of photography works from his “Silky Beauty” and “Boundless” series. Jian’s artistic research has focused on traditional Chinese paintings executed with realistic fine brushwork. His fold series has been created in its purest form with all other elements being eliminated, and only revealing silk and the human contours. In the Chinese artistic traditions, the artist often uses thick and rigid brush strokes to show clothing fitting tightly on a body, and sometimes the use of delicate strokes show clothing on a person swaying in the breeze. In this series Jian has incorporated the two styles brilliantly. The title of this exhibition, “Silky Beauty,” is borrowed from one of Zhang Jian’s photographic series. The term is derived from a Chinese idiom which loosely translates to a ‘bundle of silk,’ often used to describe a woman’s slender waist. The metaphor was earlier used by the ancient poet, Song Yu, from the Warring States period in Chinese history. Jian lives and works on Nanjing, China. This exhibition runs through November 12, 2017 at Amy Li Gallery, No.54 Caochangdi (old airport road), Chaoyang District, Beijing 100015, China. For details, visit: www.amyligallery.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
