Watters Gallery, Sydney, will host a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Vivienne Ferguson. Vivienne Ferguson lives and works on the Central Coast in New South Wales. She began her art career in Sydney, where she trained at East Sydney Technical College until 1988. She has been an exhibiting artist since 1987, during which time she has had more than 19 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions both in Australia and overseas. Her work is represented in many public and private collections. The exhibition showcases Ferguson’s layered and vibrant paintings that are a continuation of her abstracted botanical-themed works. The artist notes, “I live and work in the Blue Mountains of NSW, so I suppose it’s natural that my work should be influenced by the distinctive flora here. In fact, I am now trying to create my own version of this environment in my garden using plants endemic to the local area. The final result won’t be as daring or complex as the original – perhaps more a paean to the native plants that I find so exceptional. My garden is full of stones and spikes, dry grass, and pebbles. Spiders, lizards, and frogs live in this microcosm, under rocks or near the pond or curled in a leaf – all fighting for their survival on a daily basis and, in doing so, are contributing to the complexity and, I hope, the eventual success of this garden of mine.” Ferguson’s abstract paintings explore denseness, looseness, and rigor. She deliberately omits all inessential elements in her work and the fluid marks are unique, culminating in resolved and refined pictures that resemble phenomena of the real world. The exhibition will be on view from November 15 through December 2, 2017, at Watters Gallery, Sydney, 109 Riley St, Sydney NSW 2010, Australia. For more details, visit: https://wattersgallery.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the artworks.
