Watters Gallery, Sydney, is hosting a solo exhibition of new works by Glenn Murray.Glenn Murray describes his artistic practice as a way of exploring his relationship with the physical and metaphysical world that is expressed through balance and interconnection in the physical form of his sculptures. The exhibition showcases Murray’s new sculptures that the artist describes as ‘line drawings.’ The sculptures themselves are organic forms, created with precision from recycled fencing wire, that explore the possibilities of line in the three-dimensional form. The surprising elegance of the line creates a subtle and shifting relationship of space and solidity as one moves around, each sculpture, giving it a kind of transparency and lightness by conveying a sense of anti-monumental impermanence. Murray’s interest in solidity and emptiness conveyed through line is further explored in his collages. In an inversion of the three-dimensional form, the line in his collages frames solidity and absence, emerging from the two-dimensional space. His preference for recycled material, giving new life and purpose to the mundane, in turn complements the relationships of line and form explored in his work.Watters Gallery opened in 1964 and has been one of the most important and innovative private galleries in Sydney. It remains at the forefront of contemporary art in Australia, refusing to follow art-world fashions and adhering to a policy of showing only those artists who are totally committed to their work. To this end, the gallery relies on the unerring vision of its directors, Frank Watters and Geoffrey Legge. The exhibition is on view through December 2, 2017, at Watters Gallery, Sydney, 109 Riley St, Sydney NSW 2010, Australia. For more details, visit: https://wattersgallery.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
