The exhibition titled “Confabulations of Millennia” is currently on view at The Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art, Portland, Maine. The show features the works of 19 contemporary artists. These works are directly drawn and influenced by established styles, techniques, and objects that were perfected in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The selection on display takes history as its foundation and speaks about the intricacies and inconsistencies of modern life, whether it is social, political, or aesthetic. According to Jessica Hemmings, Professor of Crafts, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, “Many exhibitors find inspiration, rather than awe, in the craftsmanship and visual traditions that have come before us. While visual and material references that refer to bygone traditions resurface, nothing is sacrosanct. Instead, as a viewer, you are often cast as voyeur — catching glimpses of scenes you perhaps were not seeking — but may nonetheless delight in seeing.” The artists participating in “Confabulations of Millennia” are Martha Arquero, John Brauer, Joey Chiarello, and John O’Reilly, among others. The Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art conducts an innovative roster of exhibitions and public programs that focus on new perspectives and trends in Contemporary Art. It is situated in Porteous Building. The ICA showcases work by local, national, and international artists.“Confabulations of Millennia” runs through December 8, 2017 at The Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art, 522 Congress St, Portland, Maine 04101, USA.For details, visit: www.meca.edu/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
