Studio SALES di Norberto Ruggeri, Rome presents the first solo show in Rome by Romina Bassu. The works that Romina Bassu presents in her first solo show at Studio SALES by Norberto Ruggeri propose a reflection of this kind, a selection of acrylics and watercolors that reflect on the stereotypes that the evil gaze has firmly built and that still dominate. In her works one can see opposing and strident female stereotypes: the apprehensive mother, the housewife proud of her talent in the art of ironing, the young woman looking for a husband, the girl eager to please and to look beautiful, indeed, beautiful; all-female archetypes modeled according to the needs of a male culture and a consumer society that we still take for granted today and that Romina Bassu represents in a version "altered" by the female gaze. From here his portraits of overly euphoric women, the forced poses, the sometimes ironic and sometimes surreal combinations that populate his works and which, like mirrors, are reflected in each other, deforming a pre-established imaginary, creating multiple and ambiguous meanings and leaving a strong sense of suspension in the observer. The artist has chosen a specific iconographic imagery for his pictorial investigation, that of the Fifties, that is the era in which the "male gaze" has sunk its roots and then branch off in the following twenty years and until today. For years, Romina Bassuhe collected photos, movie posters, old magazines and TV spots, creating a full-bodied sample of images from which he borrows the atmospheres and suggestions in which he immerses the subjects of his pictorial works. The exhibition is on viw through February 9, 2018 at Studio SALES di Norberto Ruggeri, Piazza Dante 2- 00185 Rome, Italy. For details, visit: www.studiosales.it Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
