Carl Kostyál gallery is hosting “Plato Combinato,” the first solo exhibition of famous Dutch-American painter Peter Schuyff in the UK. This exhibition showcases Schuyff’s work reflecting his usual style of proto-digital geometrical abstraction. “Some of my best abstract paintings were reduced to a clearly simple set of rules which I simply had to follow till the end. I have to pay a lot of attention while taking little or no responsibility,” says the artist about himself. “…that really describes to me how my paintings are about nothing. How they deal with the problem of nothing… Other animals do not need a purpose in life. A contradiction to itself, the human animal cannot do without one. Can we not think of the aim of life as being simply to see?”There are three small watercolors created in 1986, which reflect a peaceful elegance, displaying a fine grid created with a chromatic gradation of shades and intensity, alongside three large oil paintings showing interplay between the human hand and mathematical precision through wavy linear and square patterns. Three wood sculptures, created in 2016, show a fluid motion in large tree-trunk. ‘Big Gold’ (2011), shows a tangle of floating spaghetti, infinitely tangled, over the surface of the canvas.Peter Schuyff was born in 1958 in Baarn, Netherlands, and schooled in art at the Vancouver School of Art. In the 1980s, he became part of the Neo-Geo Movement in art. His work is included in the collections of MoMA, New York; Metropolitan Museum, New York; and MOCA, Los Angeles; among others.
