La Fiambrera Art Gallery, Madrid, is hosting its second exhibition by the American artist Josh Agle, known worldwide as Shag. Shag is one of the most prominent of the Lowbrow movement. The exhibition is titled "The twelve seasons of Ptolemy” and consists of the 12 illustrations that the artist made in 2003 inspired by the signs of the zodiac, and that were exhibited 15 years ago in the gallery The Light of Jesus (Los Angeles, California, USA). There are also originals and serigraphs discontinued for years from the artist’s archive, which have never been shown in the country. All the silkscreens in the exhibition are unique copies and are already out of print.Shag makes slick, narrative kitsch paintings that recall early 1960s advertising illustration, Bossa Nova album art, and Disney animation. Rife with businessmen in skinny suits and women in skin-tight cat costumes drinking martinis, Shag’s paintings depict an ominous world of stylized, witty urbanites. His paintings have spawned a book, an album, a film, and a musical. Shag was commissioned to create 13 illustrations to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. The exhibition is on view through April 1, 2018, at La Fiambrera Art Gallery, Calle del Pez, 7, 28004 Madrid, Spain. For details, visit: https://www.lafiambrera.net/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
