Galería Marlborough, Madrid, is hosting Martín Chirino’s work from 1952 to 2018 in an exhibition titled “Martín Chirino in his Finisterre.” The 93-year-old artist presents an exhibition with new works. Between the present sculptures, it is possible to emphasize the titled one “Alfaguara.” “An arch for the world II,” dated in 2005, a monumental piece of 10 meters in length, “Dream of Music,” a guitar with cubist reminiscences, the “Cabeza de Jano,” also from 2017, the two versions of “Aeróvoro,” made respectively in 2015 and 2016, and “El viento,” 2015, all three in wrought iron. The 29 drawings in the sample belong to a notebook dated 1973, which now, 45 years later, are exhibited for the first time. They are recognizable in many of the ways that will later be moved to the three dimensions. The life and work of Martín Chirino has been characterized by a balance between cosmopolitanism and an identity creative of strong theoretical character that sinks the roots in its native archipelago, in its myths, its primitivism, its symbols. Their spirals, perfectly recognizable, inseparable from the name of Martín Chirino, are a part important of this own cosmology.Chirino has been awarded the International Sculpture Prize of the Budapest Biennial, the National Prize for Plastic Arts, the Canary Islands Prize for Plastic Arts, the Gold Medal for Fine Arts, the National Sculpture Award of the CEOE, the Medal of Honor of the Fine Arts Circle of Madrid, the Culture Prize 2002 (modality: Plastic Arts) of the Community of Madrid and the Prize Tomorrow Francisco Prieto of the Casa de la Moneda, Madrid (2004).The exhibition is on view through March 30, 2018, at Galería Marlborough, Orfila 5, Madrid, Spain. For details, visit: http://www.galeriamarlborough.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
