“The Ineffable Gardener,” an exhibition at Galleria Continua in San Gimignano, Italy, through April 29, features work by Loris Cecchini, an Italian artist who is known for using a variety of mediums to treat the subject of transfiguration.  The installation has been designed by the artist to suit the gallery’s theater-like space. Consisting of a substantial body of work, “The Ineffable Gardener” fills the gallery space and walls with works that range from vast metal sculptures to colorful aluminum foam rectangles. Cecchini invites the viewers to reconsider our conceptions of reality and representation — to look at the organic dimension of natural development and that of the technical-artificial landscape. At the center of the artist’s work is a new reading of spatiality where a physical space is interpreted as something biological, organic, and vital. But at the same time, it is looked at as something that is rationally structured, mechanically produced, perfectly artificial, and yet capable of an organic-structural functionality. Nature in the artist’s point of view is considered to be in constant transience of its structural and metaphysical becoming. This is evident from the two works at the entrance to the gallery. “Seed syllables,” 2008, and “Sound fossils in the Holocene garden,” 2017, introduce the viewers to a world balanced between a scientific and a poetic approach to the natural landscape. The selection on display also includes other works that were created for the show. These include two sculptures made from new modular aluminum elements. One is “Monocrystals in diagrammatic fuzziness (125),” which is based on the proliferation, growth mode and spatial aggregation of crystallographic structures. The other, “Spin-orbits (128)” in which the potential interaction expressed in quantum physics is reinterpreted in sculptural form.Cecchini (b.1969) has had his work exhibited across the world in institutions such as the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Musée d’art Moderne et Contemporain of Saint-Etienne Métropole, the MoMA PS1 in New York, the Shanghai Duolun MoMA in Shanghai, and the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro in Milan, among others. The artist has taken part in many international exhibitions, including the 56th, 51st and 49th Venice Biennale. Cecchini lives and works in Italy, after a recent five-year period in Berlin. “The Ineffable Gardener” runs through April 29, 2018, at Galleria Continua, Via del Castello 11, San Gimignano (SI), Italy. For details, visit:http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/galleria-continua-san-gimgnano/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
