The DC Moore Gallery in New York, is presenting the moody, ethereal paintings of the American artist Darren Waterston in its exhibition “Ecstatic Landscape,” on view through April 28.“His works broach the psychological through a surreal and abstracted approach to the genre rather than taking a strictly descriptive method,” the gallery says. “The paintings are seductive, drawing the viewer in by their majesty and monstrousness. Thwarted by their artifice, one is left with a sense of yearning for something not quite attainable.” “To Meet as Far as This Morning,” 2017, is one of four large canvasses that are the centerpieces of the exhibition. According to the gallery, “This Morning” is one of the four most important creations by the artist. The painting, in tones of pearl gray, pink and rose, recalls traditional Chinese inkbrush paintings, with what appears to be a rough stone pinnacle rising above a misty horizon line. “The viewer stands on the threshold of the real and the unreal, as the painting seems to offer a portal to transcendence that remains just out of reach,” the gallery says.Darren Waterston was born in 1965 in California. He works and lives in New York. He received BFA from the Otis Art Institute/Parsons in Los Angeles, and studied at the Akademie der Künste and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, both in Germany. His work has been showcased in many solo exhibitions, including at MASS MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts and the Sackler Museum at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. His paintings are included in various permanent collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; New York Public Library, New York City; The Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles; Seattle Art Museum; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.“Ecstatic Landscape” will run through April 28, 2018, at DC Moore Gallery, 535 W 22nd St, New York, NY 10011, USA.For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/dc-moore-gallery/overviewClick on the slideshow to have a sneak peek of the artist’s work.Founder Louise Blouin: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/artists/louise-blouin--2953510
