Peter Clark’s whimsical works in paper collage, made of everything from maps, labels, album covers and discarded tickets to musical scores, gift wrapping and love letters, are the subject of “Dogs, Frocks & Beyond” at the Portland Gallery’s London venue. The artist uses paper scraps as his paintbrush and palette, with an uncanny ability to take these dissimilar pieces and make something cohesive, with real character and a sense of animation. Despite the title of the show, “Dogs” comprises an entire menagerie of animals, including pigs, donkeys and roosters, as well as inanimate subjects like tractors and a series of frilly dresses.Born in Yorkshire in 1944, the artist studied at Manchester College of Art and Design from 1962 to 1966. He had a career in advertising and television before dedicating himself to collage. In 1999, Clark began creating his first commissioned collages. From then on, the demand for his work has snowballed, leading to him become a full-time artist with works in private and public collections worldwide. The exhibition will be on view from April 12 through April 27, 2018, at Portland Gallery, 3 Bennet Street London SW1A 1RP.For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/portland-gallery/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
