Paying tribute to British naturalist and explorer Alfred Russell Wallace, who spent eight years in the Malay Archipelago studying its flora and fauna, photographer Ernest Goh encourages the viewer to appreciate nature through a lens of wonderment and fascination with a three-part exhibition at Objectifs Gallery. The solo exhibition presents two of his latest photographic series – The Gift Book and Breakfast at 8, Jungle at 9 – and an interactive installation. In The Gift Book, Goh presents insects, butterfly chrysalises, and flowers in geometric patterns as if viewed through the prism of a kaleidoscope. The effect, akin to images on wrapping paper, alludes to our ‘disposable’ culture and people’s careless attitude towards nature. In Breakfast at 8, Jungle at 9, animal specimens are presented in a cold, clinical way, reminiscent of the zoological archives’s presentation, a reflection of the imposition of structures and systems on nature through scientific study. The highlight of the exhibition is the interactive installation titled Time to Wrap Up, with life-sized objects such as a piano and a supermarket pushcart wrapped in white onto which visitors are invited to paste insect and animal stickers made by the artist from the two photographic series. As the objects get slowly covered by the stickers, visitor might reflect on the temporality of man-made structure and the force of nature.Breakfast at 8, Jungle at 9 runs from 10 June to 19 July 2015 at Objectifs Gallery, and an artist talk will be given on 20 June.
