Sculptures capturing the unusual combination of the raw and the refined is an exhibition titled “Some Truths” by Arlene Shechet on display at Almine Rech Gallery, Paris, through May 26, 2018.In these works, the conveyance of power and vulnerability of what it is like to be embodied and alive is employed by carefully locating the area in between the subject and object, figuration and abstraction, color and form, and humor and pathos. Arlene Shechet’s excellent ceramicist skills and knowledge is incorporated in generating forms in companion materials as well. She creates contrasting materials that are stacked, inlayed, woven or folded together to portray the combination of extremes of balance and precariousness. The certain objects used are juxtaposed with materials and sensibilities and are placed through a refined arrangement.According to the gallery, “Shechet feels the weight of history in this first solo exhibition in Paris. Sculptures executed between 2015 and 2018 that represent Shechet’s idiosyncratic visual language are displayed in the main gallery.” An immediate empathetic response from the viewer is earned in each of the uniquely positioned sculptures, thus exploring the psychology of the transitional space. The rough-hewn and rugged compositions are materialized in an intense and refined manner.A large sand-cast aluminum sculpture titled “Paw” (2018) is debuted in the front room. This piece of art relates to Shechet’s upcoming far-reaching outdoor project at New York City’s Madison Square Park that will run from September 2018 through April 2019. This public exhibition will draw attention to both a classical sculpture court and a sunken living room.An original installation (from 1900) of a grouping of idiosyncratic columnar plinths gathered together on a large low oval at the Rodin Museum has been admired by the artist. Almine Rech pays direct homage to this work of art in the smallest of the three rooms in the gallery. As the gallery writes, “The title of the exhibition, ‘Some Truths,’ speaks to Shechet’s active investigations in the studio, resulting in works that are each singular and hard won. Through unrehearsed steps, but with an eye on history, a surprising and coherent body of work comes to life.” This exhibition runs through May 26, 2018, at Almine Rech Gallery, 64 Rue de Turenne, 75003 Paris, France. For details please visit: http://www.alminerech.com/exhibitions/4856-arlene-shechetClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder Louise Blouin
