Blue Lotus Gallery will display Michael Kenna’s “Philosopher’s Tree” at its Hong Kong venue.Recognized as one of the most important and influential black-and-white landscape photographers, Michael Kenna’s “Philosopher’s Tree” focuses on a subject most dear to Kenna: trees. The concept of time is at the heart of the exhibition. It covers extreme angles of time where the photographer is also an observer with his long exposures (lasting up to several hours), traversing the globe and documenting its beauty, from China to Italy, Brazil to Norway. Then the next part is the magical union, is of course the trees, perennial plants that are essential to our ecosystem and the survival of most organisms. In “Philosopher’s Tree” flora are the true witness of time, the quiet story tellers who have seen it all. One of the oldest trees “The Hyperion Tree” in California lived for more than 5,000 years. It has been around since the time of the Ancient Egyptians, when Vikings were building vessels to conquer new lands and the world population was estimated at only 30 million people.“Slowness is a philosophy that carries through all that Michael Kenna does. For 45 years he has worked with film and still prefers it to digital. Sometimes his exposure times last many hours. He makes all his own prints in his own darkroom. Good trees grow slowly, and those with strong resilience situated in good conditions can live for thousands of years,” said the gallery. “Each tree has its own story to tell. The viewing pleasure of Kenna’s work is likewise connected to a change of pace, close focusing, and a meditation of sorts.” “Philosopher’s Tree” is the story of an artist’s childhood friendship with trees that has culminated in works that demonstrate the beauty of simplicity. One cannot help but wonder, if these trees could talk, what would they tell us?The exhibition holds deep meaning considering the risks to Earth’s climate currently with youngsters having little contact to the natural world. The photographers capture that nothing compares to the majestic plants — which have no borders and that consume only what they need and give back to humans in the form of clean air among many other wonderful gifts. The exhibition will be on view from June 15 through July 1, 2018, at Blue Lotus Gallery, 1606 chai wan industrial city phase 1, 60 wing tai road, Chai Wan, Hong Kong. For details, visit: http://www.bluelotus-gallery.com Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin
