Gordon Wiens’ “Nature Transformed” features a collection of abstract acrylic works, each subtly different from the other. The exhibition opens on June 9 at Bau-Xi Gallery’s Vancouver venue.Wiens creates contemporary abstract paintings in acrylic on canvas and paper. His most recent work reveals his interest in the transient and fragile nature of existence. "As part of my work I collect found objects and take photos of crumbling walls, faded signs, rotting flowers, and other debris in various states of erosion. These objects have been transformed by nature and imbued with a strange beauty. What is revealed in many of these weathered ruins is the interrelationship of orderly/chaotic, permanent/transient, and physical/spiritual qualities. It is within this context of connections and contradictions that my paintings are created. I never refer directly to source materials; rather I draw inspiration from their essence. Each painting develops through a process of layering using a personal vocabulary of marks and forms. Through this approach a unique image emerges that is open to interpretation by the viewer,'' says the artist.“Wiens’ acrylic paintings are largely inspired by the imperfect beauty and impermanence of decaying objects found in nature. Wiens uses an intuitive approach to his layering of texture, color, and form. Wiens’ material erosion of paint mimics nature’s elements as the artist’s forms are fragmented through the act of pulling and erasure. Multiple layers of forms and lines are added, covered, and altered. Through the artist’s process of painting, a subtle transformation occurs. A vestige of each layer remains to illustrate the understated and undefinable qualities of the transient beauty of nature,” writes the gallery.Gordon Wiens studied painting at St. Lawrence College where he subsequently taught drawing and painting. Wiens' works have been exhibited in Vancouver and Toronto, and can be found in many private collections.Known as one of Canada’s most highly regarded art galleries, with a reputation founded on adherence to the highest standards in quality of art and service to clients, Bau-Xi has been a central member of the Art Dealers Association of Canada since the early 1970s.
