Colnaghi Gallery in London will showcase “A Tale of Two Kingdoms: The Art of Spain and Naples,” an exhibition highlighting the cultural relationship between the artists of Spain and Naples between the 16th and 18th centuries, which was a key factor in the flourish of Baroque art in the 17th century.“The artistic exchange between Spain and Naples — culminating in the Art of the Baroque” is a journey between the two cities through the artistic practice of Baroque paintings. The sole idea of showcasing these baroque paintings is to explore the artistic exchanges that took place between the two cities, forming ‘A Tale of Two Kingdoms.’ The exhibition will examine the Art of the Baroque to map the exchanges between Spain and Naples. The background is important as the Italian city was being ruled by Spain from 1503 to 1714 and the prolonged period of foreign rule enabled two-centuries-long cultural exchanges extending to art. The exchanges were reflected through the Spanish artists who were frequently traveling to Naples and similarly, the Neopolitan artists often visited the Spanish capital, stayed there and thrived in their creative process in Spain.“Early highlights of the exhibition include a sculpture of Mars by the Italian artist Giovanni da Nola (documented from 1508-1553), commissioned by his Spanish patron and viceroy of Naples, the 2nd Duke of Cardona; ‘Stoic Thinker,’ a striking and rarely-seen figure of a philosopher by the artist known as the Master of the Annunciation of the Shepherds (1604-1654), who thrived in Naples having believed to have traveled from his native Spain; and Saint Francis of Assisi, an important work by Pedro de Mena (1628-1688), one of the most celebrated sculptors of the Spanish Golden Age,” the gallery says. The Baroque is a highly elaborate and expensive style of architecture, art, and music that flourished in Europe from the early 17th until the late 18th centuries, just after the Renaissance. The Catholic Church was its sponsor to counter the simple style advocated by the Protestants.“A Tale of Two Kingdoms: The Art of Spain and Naples” will be on show from June 29 through July 6, 2018, at Colnaghi gallery, 26 Bury Street, London SW1Y 6AL, United Kingdom. For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/colnaghi-old-masters/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the artworks.http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder Louise Blouin
