Hiram Butler Gallery is hosting an exhibition titled “Four Artists Four Rooms” featuring works by Mark Fox, Joseph Havel, Terrell James and Kate Shepherd at its Houston venue.Joseph Havel has long been inspired by the written word, naming Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, John Ashbery and John Berryman, among his favorites. The artist’s process is to work on about six of them at a time, reiterating vocabularies from previous works, “taking bits of himself and putting them back into a hole,” or circle. There are some compositions that are light and airy, hollowed circles of gray marker or graphite, while others weigh heavy with the thick smears of gray oil stick. There is also the absence of color and the frenetic nature of the compositions, interspersed with letter forms and smudges, allow the pieces to work as a collective whole, as well as standalone pieces with a specific, acute narrative.Mark Fox works across media, including drawing, sculpture, painting, and installation. He has a rather pervasive interest in pushing the boundaries of paper with emphasis on the intersection of intention and chance. Many of his works usually start with stains, spills, and stray marks that then form the basis for intricate compositions, while many of his paintings involve the endless cutting and rearranging of component parts.Kate Shepherd is an American artist based in New York City. Shepherd’s artistic process results in gleaming, reflective surfaces that allow viewers to see their own reflections within an intimate, vibrant, spatially complex image and she continues explorations of color and line in works on paper.Terrell James is an American artist too who makes abstract paintings, prints and sculptures. The artist is best known for large-scale works with paint on stretched fabric, and for parallel small scale explorations such as the “Field Studies” series, ongoing since 1997.The exhibition is on view through July 28, 2018, at Hiram Butler Gallery, 4520 Blossom Street, Houston Texas, 77007.For details, visit: https://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/hiram-butler-gallery/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin
