PhoPa Gallery is exhibiting Jim Nickelson’s “Cosmos” at its Portland venue.Jim Nickelson’s “Cosmos” is developed from three separate projects — Cosmos is a selection of photographs by the artist that explores the way that human beings grapple with the unknown, particularly as it pertains to science and cosmology. “His photographs are inspired by Earth’s natural rhythms and cycles, but also by the human understanding and cultural implications of these patterns. Nickelson uses photography to examine how we as humans seek to impose order on what we experience, how we explain our role in the Universe via story or myth, and simply, how we try to understand the workings of the Universe itself,” says the gallery. The photographs include pieces from multiple projects like “Adventures in Celestial Mechanics” centers on the full moon and the way various cultures relate to its cycles through naming conventions. Then there is “Harmony of the Spheres” built from abstracted celestial objects and is inspired by the idea, dominant for 2,000 years among thinkers ranging from Pythagoras to Aristotle to Plato to Kepler, that objects spin in the night sky to create celestial music in harmonious relationship with each other, the natural world, and the human soul.“Terra Incognita” explores imagined landscapes or worlds created using photographs of our own natural world as raw materials. It also includes Cosmographia, Codex Natura, & East of the Sun, West of the Moon, each with a distinct vision of imagined landscapes.Jim Nickelson is a fine art photographer, custom digital printer, and teacher and is the author of “Fine Art Inkjet Printing,” published by Rocky Nook in 2017. Earlier, he pursued the classic artistic career path of NASA engineer and corporate attorney (with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from University of Texas at Austin and a J.D. from Harvard Law School). He makes his home in Camden, Maine, with his wife and daughter. The exhibition is on view through July 28, 2018, at PhoPa Gallery, 132 Washington Avenue Portland, ME 04101.For details, visit: http://www.phopagallery.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the artworks.http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin
