General Hardware Contemporary is currently hosting a solo exhibition by Sarah Sands Phillips titled “Idyll.”The exhibition features the artist’s latest works. The works were inspired when Sarah returned to the family home where she had grown up, and took a number of photographs of light entering spaces. For the exhibition, the artist returns to these photographs as a source material for paintings. Here, the artist uses the process of material layering to create the surfaces present throughout each work.“Strata of oil paint are built up on stretched linen and canvas supports, with its gently smoothed application akin to that of a lath and plaster wall. Her chosen color palette recalls a light and shadow spectrum, but is also reminiscent of the body — gray matter and peachy flesh tones, vein-like blue. Into these carefully prepared surfaces, Sands Phillips carves linear suggestions of rooms that reveal subtle colorations from underlying layers, continuing a process of mark making through erasure present throughout her practice. The resulting minimal compositions appear as spaces etched at the peripheries of memory, perhaps something dreamt. They are non-places without a sense of time, a setting with the potential for future action to occur, whilst also seeming as though somewhere remembered from long ago,” says the gallery. Her works show signs of their physical labor and exude a sense of time through a process of layering and erasure. Raised playing classical piano, her personal memories point to an interest in the musicality of painting, and help explain moments of repetition and rhythm in her work.Born in 1984, Toronto , Canada, Sarah Sands Phillips has an interdisciplinary practice encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, and experimental film. She holds a BFA from Queen’s University, Kingston, and an MA from Concordia University, Montreal. She has exhibited locally (Angell Gallery, Birch Contemporary, General Hardware Contemporary, Gallery 44, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Videofag, DNA Artspace); nationally (The Dayroom, NL) and in the US (Mulherin New York, NY). In the fall, she is relocating to the UK to pursue an MFA at the Ruskin School of Art at the University of Oxford. She was additionally awarded an Erna Plachte Scholarship, recognizing the strength of her application and her potential as an artist. The exhibition will be on view through July 14, 2018, at General Hardware Contemporary, 1520 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6R 1A4, Canada. For details visit: http://generalhardware.caClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.com                            Founder: Louise Blouin
