“Sarah Edmondson: According to Chance,” on view at Galerie Pompom in Sydney through July 22,  presents a series of new needlepoint works by the artist.Speaking on her works, the artist says, "The principle guiding my work is the belief that chance events open up opportunities of discovery. The chance event of a glitch, an error in a structured system, has been rendered in needlepoint tapestry with wool on canvas in an attempt to stabilize its ‘intrusion’ through aesthetic re-interpretation. The process of needlepoint is labor intensive and contradicts the essence of chance and the glitch. Each individual stitch represents a pixel from digital imagery, bringing the digital and analogue together. We are in perpetual motion in an age of digital information, quickly moving to the next image or piece of information. Perhaps the tapestry will give the viewer reason to slow down, ponder for a moment the time taken to build up the work in contrast to the instantaneous digital breaking down of the glitch.Sarah Edmondson is an emerging artist currently completing her Masters of Fine Art at National Art School, Sydney. She graduated from NCAD with a BA (Hons) Art and Design Education, 2012. She was a finalist in "Stills: National Still Life Award" 2017, receiving a judge’s commendation. She was a finalist twice in the Gosford Art Prize. Edmondson presented a solo exhibition at Watt Space Gallery, Newcastle, in 2013, and has been included in various group exhibitions since 2014. Her work is conceptually driven with a focus on contemporary sociological and ecological issues. Through a variety of mediums including video, photography, installation and paint, she makes work that questions the validity of certain information presented to us by the media and state, the gallery says. She confronts the viewer with fictitious information or staged scenarios in order to highlight the ambiguity of our learned reality.Galerie pompom is a commercial gallery in Sydney’s Chippendale, representing 19 Sydney and Melbourne-based artists.
