Jan Manton Art is currently hosting a solo exhibition by Simon Degroot titled “Capricious Forms.”The exhibition showcases a collection of the artist’s latest works. In this exhibition, the artist collects details built from the environment and represents them again as flat abstract shapes on the canvas. Degroot focuses on strategies of collecting and organizing, recasting and recombining forms in order to reinvent and rebuild.Degroot engages specific images from visual culture in order to reimagine these forms in abstract painting. He uses strategies of disassembly and reassembly to explore how abstract shapes from art history and the built environment can be translated into painting considering how abstraction can be used to build and compose new work while simultaneously acknowledging existing and past structures.Simon Degroot is a Brisbane-based artist who considers how contemporary abstract painting can interrogate and form a dialogue with pre-existing image details and abstract forms.Degroot completed postgraduate studies at the Queensland College of Art where he was awarded his PhD in 2017 with an exhibition titled “Familiar Beyond Recognition: Translation in Contemporary Abstraction.” Degroot maintains an active profile of solo and group exhibitions including: “Decorate” at Wellington St Projects, Sydney (2017), “Picture Building” at Kick Arts Contemporary, Cairns (2016), “Indirect Response,” Postgraduate and Other Projects Griffith University, Brisbane (2015), “Composite Orders” Rubicon Ari, Melbourne (2015), “Shallow Space” at Australian National Capital Artists Gallery, Canberra (2014). In 2015 and 2018, he was awarded the Moreton Bay Art Award. In addition to his studio practice, Degroot creates large-scale wall paintings and exterior murals. He has completed significant public work for a range of high-profile clients including The City of South Perth, Bundaberg Regional Galleries, Queensland Rail, Cairns Regional Council, Brisbane City Council and The Brisbane Hilton. These projects complement his studio investigations and provide opportunities for expanded painting.Jan Montan Art Gallery has been supporting artists through exhibitions held around the year. Jan Manton is also an approved valuer of Contemporary Australian Art (from 1970 to the present) in paintings, prints and sculpture for the Australian Government’s Culture Gifts Program.
