Dominik Mersch Gallery is currently hosting a solo exhibition by Liam Garstang titled “The Shepherd’s Crook.”The exhibition presents a collection of the artist’s latest works. “Liam Garstang’s practice is trans-disciplinary; typically his concepts resolve themselves in installations that involve sculpture, video, ceramics, and print media. His works are based on personal, generational, and collective events and iconography, as well as the excavation of emotional responses to place. A strong sense of the performative also underpins his work, inasmuch as it is oriented around notions of ritualization, presence and gesture,” says the gallery.Garstang is the curator of Sunday Punch and Galleries Manager at Sydney College of the Arts, where he completed a BVA Honors (First Class) in 2008 and was awarded The University of Sydney Honors Scholarship for Academic Excellence. Garstang’s practice evokes questions relating to experiences of loss and reclamation, and aims to open up dialogues for himself and his audience that explore alternative modes of expression. His works are realized through a trans-disciplinary approach that includes installation, video, performance, printmaking, and ceramics. In 2014, he curated the outdoor exhibition “2cubed” for St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Sydney. He has received numerous awards and prizes, including an Australian Council for the Arts ArtStart Grant (2011) and has undertaken artist residencies at OBRAS Centre for Arts and Sciences, Portugal (2012), and Megalo Print Studios, Canberra (2010).Founded in 2006 in Sydney, the gallery aims to exhibit work that has an indelible impact aesthetically and conceptually, challenges and engages its clients and broader audience by presenting the finest artist at the forefront of contemporary art practice.
