“Let’s Dance” at 45 Park Lane, the Dorchester Collection’s contemporary Mayfair hotel, is the first solo exhibition in London in more than 50 years of German-born Arizona-based artist Rotraut, the sister of Gunther Uecker and former husband and artistic companion of Yves Klein whose estate she continues to manage.Presented by Galerie Gmurzynska of Switzerland, the exhibition showcases the dynamism, vibrancy, and playfulness of Rotraut’s unique and highly developed visual language through a curated collection of fourteen of the artist’s paintings and sculptures, including an additional sculpture created by Rotraut near the garden at The Dorchester.Although her work is influenced by the practices of both Uecker and Klein as well as Matisse, Rotraut’s primary sources of inspiration are the energies of nature and the landscape as well as the power of the elements. According to the curatorial statement, “Rotraut’s forms are symbols of the ‘collective unconsciousness’ of that cosmic abundance, spiritual gifts of joy and well-being.”In a 2006 interview with Jacques Bouzerand, Rotraut describes her mystical attachment to the earth. “I love the earth like a mother,” she said. “Through my love of the earth, I gather energies, I concentrate them. I let them run through my body. I grew up with nature and in nature. Nature is my home, I can feel the elements like life itself.”“I draw out from deep inside what it is I want to express. I dig deep,” Rotraut told Bouzerand. “The subconscious is connected with everything; you have to make it manifest. Everything I do, every time, is about making the unconscious conscious. I accept what comes to me and try to get off to a good start. I don’t think art should have any limits.”Rotraut “Let’s Dance” is at 45 Park Lane until September 1, 2015
