Sun Xun, a promising young Chinese artist, creates works of art that deal with world issues and events, as well as historical context, in an effort to piece together national histories that may be purposely forgotten or hidden from the public. His solo exhibition “Unfounded Predictions” at ShangART Gallery Singapore showcases 43 works created as part of art residency programs around the world between 2012-2014. The works have been exhibited at the 2012 Kochi-Muziris Biennale in India and the Tampa Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Arts in Russia. Works on view include the artist’s “Economic Map of Shandong Province Printed in Showa Period” from 2014, a map from the eastern Chinese province that includes a dragon and mythical landscapes drawn in ink. Other works include “The Observer,” 2012, featuring a man with a weather visage in black and red.Ahead of the exhibition, Sun Xun stated: “In retrospect, the world is still huge while I am minute in comparison, and the unknown is boundless like a black hole. Well, I have marked my presence around the world with over a hundred pieces of painting created for each residency program to witness the merciless history. For history, for life, for art, perhaps the only thing we need to be is to embrace the unpredicted, unfounded occurrence!”The artist will also paint live at ShangART Singapore, drawing inspiration from present day influences.“Unfounded Predictions” runs at ShangART Gallery Singapore from August 1-October 4.
