James Morrison’s breathtaking paintings of Scotland including Angus, the west coast, and an idyllic hedgerow will be one of the highlights of the 2015 Edinburgh Art Festival. The landscape painter will feature prominently in a solo show titled “The North Wind” at The Scottish Gallery, the gallery’s leading show for the festival.Hailed as one of Scotland’s most renowned landscape artists, Morrison typically depicts the farmland near his home in Angus, the Scottish county known as “The Mearns,” and the untamed wilderness of Scotland’s west coast. “The North Wind” exhibition will encompass three years of work, including never before seen subjects and some works made in the environment they depict. The exhibition will also include a found picture from 1963 related to the legacy of painter Joan Eardley who tragically passed at the age of 42. Morrison was deeply influenced by the painter and considered her a friend, living with her at her cottage in Catterline where she spent her last years.Morrison’s rich body of work aligns well with the Edinburgh Art Festival, and in its way contributes to the understanding of the country’s landscape. The Edinburgh Art Festival is the UK’s largest annual festival of visual art and includes emerging as well as established artists in a majority of free events and exhibitions.“The North Wind” is on view from August 6-September 5 at The Scottish Gallery as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival.
