Roger Schall (1904-1995) is a unique photographer in that he could straddle the realms of war reportage and fashion photography in his practice. A contemporary of Brassaï, Schall also was captivated by the city of Paris, a passion that will be explored in the upcoming “Paris by Night” exhibition at Galerie Argentic. In its first exhibition of the new season, Galerie Argentic will show unpublished and exclusive photos by Schall that capture the city of light by dark. It is not the first time Paris has been photographed under the shroud of darkness, but Schall photographs the city in a unique way. His photos find Parisians in moments of solitude, alone in an alley of walking down a cobbled street.Said Galerie Argentic, “He transforms the classical rigour of the architecture into an intimate tableaux, fixing for an instant the fugitive silhouettes and glances. A resolutely humanistic dynamic of Paris shines through these photographs, like a vital spirit, an impetus.”Famous sights including the Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur and rue Saint-Julien Le Pauvre are seen in new ways in these stunning photos with anonymous figures and various plays on light. Schall frames these scenes from the front, avoiding classical compositions. These relatively unknown and un-exhibited photos show a Paris rarely captured.“Paris by Night” by Roger Schall is on view at Galerie Argentic from September 4-October 11.
