The late French artist César Baldaccini’s work is being explored in a sprawling retrospective at New York’s Luxembourg & Dayan. “César” is the artist’s first solo show in the United States in more than half a century. It fills the entirety of the gallery’s Upper East Side townhouse. Featuring 24 rare objects from the artist’s estate, major museums, and important private collections. The show focuses in particular on works from the 1960s and 70s and coincides with the 60th anniversary of the artist’s first one-man exhibition, which took place at the Galerie Lucien Durand in Paris. César was a founding member of the Nouveaux Réalistes in 1960, working alongside contemporaries like Yves Klein, Christo and Martial Raysse. The exhibition is the result of a years-long collaboration between the gallery and Stéphanie Busuttil-Janssen, head of Foundation César and the artist's former companion.
