Taglialatella Galleries will host an exhibition, titled “Zevs: Liquid Assets”, at the gallery’s New York location. The exhibition will feature original and limited edition works by influential graffiti and pop artist Cristophe Schwarz, aka Zevs (b.1977, Saverne, France). The artist has been a feature of many gallery and museum exhibitions across the globe, and his works are well-sought-after in the private collections and auction houses alike, but he keeps creating work for public consumption. In November 2016, the artist created a massive site-specific installation in the historical French castle Le Château de Vincennes, deemed as one of his notable works. The exhibition will feature paintings on canvas and board, sculpture, and select works on paper by Zevs. Working in the streets of Paris in the late 1990’s, the artist adopted his moniker after nearly being struck by a train that locals called Zeus. He became an important name in the street art world, and attracted a particular following in Paris, where people began to notice his recognizable works around the city, tracing the shadows of Parisian street lights, called “Electric Shadows”. His work became more controversial in the 2000’s when he began adapting billboard signs and advertisements on the streets by cutting out models or words and replacing them with anti-commercial messages and imagery, attracting wraths from some local officials as they preferred to call it vandalism; while the artist himself referred the term for this medium as “Visual Kidnapping”. In the mid-2000’s, Zevs began to explore a style that would become his trademark iconography, called “Liquidation”, created by dripping paint from the logos of familiar brands that were considered symbols of wealth, status, and corporate power. He got arrested in 2011 in Hong Kong when he announced his exhibition by painting a large, dripping black Chanel logo on a boutique clothing store. The exhibition will be on view from September 14 through October 1, 2017 at Taglialatella Galleries, 229 10th Avenue, New York, NY 10011, USA.For details, visit: www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/taglialatella-galleries/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
