Caldwell Synder Gallery, San Francisco presents Rik van Iersel's collection of recent paintings. The artist’s works majorly concern the mechanisms of human relationships in its myriad revelatory form. His paintings endeavour to depict these resolutions. Born in Maastricht, Netherlands, Rik van Iersel now lives and works in Eindhoven. He spent the initial stages of his career experimenting with cartoon illustration but in the course of time, swerved his artistic ambition to the possibilities of painting, within both a technical and subjective scope of work. A purely self-taught artist, van Iersel’s work corresponds with Art Brut’s hailing of marginal, outsider artist figures and the ‘COBRA’ movement’s revival of expressionism. With time, van Iersel has accumulated a repertoire of powerful and original subject matter by intersecting his everyday impressions of the outside world with his own internal dialogues. He quenches his creative curiosity by exploring the medium as an obsessive adventure. His artistic strokes are centred on the dynamics of human relationships in its varied revelatory forms, and for the artist, painting brings out those concerns in a resolute way. He makes optimum use of the communicative power painting gives him. The viscidness of the paints, the electrified palette, the frantic, determined strokes, the peripatetic and indisciplined sketches demonstrate an unabashed, almost raw expression .He purposefully heckles with his art form most of the time. The elongated anatomy, distorted faces and flappable lines expose an art laden with idiosyncrasies. Van Iersel boasts of an astute psychology mixed with puerile innocence. His fearless brushwork and explosive palette, fuses traditions of expressionism, symbolism and Pop art, into paintings of insightful psychological depth and visual complexity. The artist has exhibited at numerous museums, galleries and international art fairs, including the Galerie Peter Borchardt, University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands; Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, Germany; Museum van Bommel van Dam, Venlo, The Netherlands, and MU Art foundation, Eindhoven. The exhibition is on view through  August 31, 2017 at Caldwell Synder Gallery, Union Square,341 Sutter St, San Francisco, CA 9410.For details, visit: www.caldwellsynder.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
