Andrea Schwartz Gallery, San Francisco presents the first solo exhibition of new works by Chad Hasegawa. As the artist says himself that his artistic ability is developed on the basis of wall painting. He says - “The paints I use, the layering process, the learning process, while painting walls, you deal with elements of weather: rain, wind, dust, and all angles of direct sunlight. All these elements will influence how I paint my canvas.” Hasegawa further says that his approach to painting is not to understand that he is painting on canvas, but rather painting on canvas with the understanding of painting on walls. In his current body of work, he creates an eclectic blend of his resourceful street art background and fine art influences. A rhapsody of sorts, Hasegawa’s non-objective artworks depend on forms and hues, as they relate to one another to form a single shape. Hasegawa wants his paintings to last even in the outdoors, and applies the same techniques while working on a canvas. He uses latex paint, and oversized brush strokes to ensure these paintings triumph the test of time, just as his wall paintings always do.  Hasegawa’s biggest influence have been the traditional Hawaiian quilts which are culturally viewed more as works of art, meant to be passed down from generation to generation. The colors of these fabrics reflect the royal choice of hues of the great kings and queens of ancient Hawaii. The palettes are strong and robust, the designs graphic and balanced in composition. Overall, one gets the sense that the hues in Hasegawa’s paintings justify the saying - ‘Opposites Attract.’The exhibition is on view through August 31, 2017 at Andrea Schwartz Gallery,545- 4th Street, San Francisco, CA 94107.For details, visit: www.asgallery.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peak of the exhibition.
