Karin Weber Gallery presents Li Ting Ting’s “The Sound of Silence,” the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition includes her signature works with still-lives and landscapes complemented with works created out of wood carvings. Li Ting Ting’s paintings, inspired by the traditional Chinese ink painting techniques and infused with modern themes, are on their course to create artworks beyond boundaries blurring its edges to form almost a new genre of art. Her paintings invite the audience to her own fairy tale yet take them through a whimsical adventure. Her works balance out their core potential to become a body of work that represent a form which is part classical and part pop art. This evolution of her very own style and her signature techniques express the artist’s creativity yet makes way for her sensitivity. In her words, “there are many interesting things about ink painting. Once you get into it, the fascination is irresistible.”Li Ting Ting’s painterly style celebrates and glorifies the humble objects of mundane life, the components taken out from daily usage and renders them into the center pieces of her still-life paintings. Her works do not approach the classical compositions; on the contrary they are often infused with a sense of life and movement. Li’s works have a poetic ring to them as the subjects of the paintings transcend from their materiality into ethereal objects. As shoes, statues and crowns are uplifted to fit deeper expressions, her works ring a bell to the timeless elegance of Chinese ink painting. Using woodcarvings to create conversations between the two different approaches results into a fusion that echoes her own creativity as it resonates the style of the paintings from which the woodcarvings were primarily carved from. The resultant fusion creates a profound stillness that can only be called “The Sound of Silence,” as titled aptly and with brilliance.Li Ting Ting was born in Shanxi, China, in 1982. She has graduated with a BFA from College of Arts, Shanxi Normal University, China in 2004 and continued her studies to obtain a MA from the College of Art, Renmin University of China in 2007. She lives and works in Beijing. In the past ten years of her art practice, she has achieved a considerable amount of grip and mastery over her medium and techniques, which have enabled her to create fusions between traditional and contemporary. She has been able to create her signature patterns with a niche of her very own painterly style. Her paintings are showcased in the collection of Today Art Museum in Beijing, The Origo Collection and White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney. The exhibition is on view from September 7 through September 30 at Karin Weber Gallery, 20 Aberdeen Street, Central, Hong Kong. For details, visit: http://www.karinwebergallery.com/exhibitions/the-sounds-of-silence/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the artworks.
