Galeria Nara Roesler presents "Tomie Othake: On the Tips of the Fingers," an exhibition of the works by artist Tomie Othake.Born in 1913, Othake was a Japanese Brazilian artist. She came to Brazil in 1936 and couldn’t return due to the World War II. Thereafter, she settled in Sao Paulo. Othake started painting in 1951 and has participated in numerous exhibitions. She was awarded the Order of the Rio Branco in 1988 and the Order of Cultural Merit in 2006.The exhibition is curated by Paulo Miyada and comprises of her paintings from the 1970s. It also features some of her engravings and sketchbooks. These are not known within the art circuit and give the audience a glimpse of the roots of Othake’s drawings, sketches, and the process of her pictorial experimentations. In the compositions of the 1960s, Othake usually tore up pieces of paper. She did this when she at the starting point of her paintings. The figures of the paintings dating back to that era had simple geometric shape, but they carried with them the memories of being torn with the tip of the artist’s fingers. In the 1970s, the shapes have clear contours as Othake used scissors. This was the artist’s way to deal with instantaneousness of the gestures and of balancing chance and control throughout the process of painting. The exhibition is on view through September 30, 2017, at Galeria Nara Roesler, avenida europa, 655 jardim europa 01449-001, São Paulo, sp, Brazil. For more details visit http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/galeria-nara-roesler/overview --{cke_protected}{C}%3C!%2D%2Dtd%20%7Bborder%3A%201px%20solid%20%23ccc%3B%7Dbr%20%7Bmso-data-placement%3Asame-cell%3B%7D%2D%2D%3E--> Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
