Park Ryu Sook Gallery, Seoul is presenting a solo exhibition by artist Lee Seung Hee titled "TAO: Between Dimensions." In this exhibition, which is also the artist's third solo show with the gallery, Lee presents a beautiful installation of black bamboo made of ceramic as well as his new works in Tao series, the set of ‘ceramic paintings’ which gained him much acclaim from the international audience. For the bamboo installation, also named Tao, he joined the ceramic bamboo joints by baking piece by piece in the fire, and each piece is then meticulously formed to fit connecting pieces. While making thousands of pieces of bamboo without the use of frames, Lee let his bamboo take different forms, the result of which is a 4.5-meter tall bamboo forest. As viewers walk into the ‘forest of contemplation,' a fascinating tension created between the flexible natural tree and the inflexible man-made pottery can be observed.Lee Seung Hee (b.1958 in Cheongju, Korea) has lived and worked in Jingdezhen, China’s ‘Porcelain Capital,' since 2008. Lee acquired his B.A. from Cheongju University’s Craft Design Department. He has been exploring the similarities, differences, and relationships between two-dimensional solid objects. He constantly challenges himself to refrain from the stereotypes formed by familiar notions of the visual images, and as a result, he has developed a unique standard of his ceramic works, a new prospect to convert three–dimensional porcelain to two-dimensional ones in relief. His recent participation in notable exhibitions includes Contemporary Korean Ceramics, V&A Museum, London (2017), Korean Contemporary Ceramics, Bernardaud Foundation, Limoges (2016), Vallauris International Biennale of Ceramics, Vallauris (2016), Hong Kong Arts Center Flagship Exhibition, Constancy & Change in Traditional Korean Art, La Triennale di Milano, Milan (2015) and Hong Kong Art Center (2015). His works are in the collections of Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, Museum of Contemporary Art, Krakow (MOCAK), and National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea. The exhibition is on view through October 14, 2017, at Park Ryu Sook Gallery, Nature Poem 3F, Apgujeong-ro 461, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Korea. For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/park-ryu-sook-gallery/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
