Galerie Templon is hosting the works of Jitish Kallat in an exhibit titled “Covariance.” Kallat is seen as one of the most iconic artists his generation has produced. His works are an amalgam of social, political, autobiographical and artistic references which reflect the rapidly changing country of India. Taking a cue from Biology, Archaeology, and Sociology, Kallat weaves together these very poignant narratives that tell a tale of a relationship between culture and nature. Ironical yet poetic his works subtly depict the themes of life, time and death; while doing so, the artist never tries to make a direct statement but prefers to depict reality in an unreal manner. Kallat has often drawn inspiration from the squalid urban decay he witnessed while growing up. That rawness struck a chord deep inside him, he needed an outlet to pour out his anguish, and he found it in painting. Critics suggest that though many post-modernist painters have depicted the fabric of India in their works, no one has done it the way Kallat has. He intentionally leaves many of his paintings to dust, neglecting them; he wants them to be as real as reality. What makes his style unique is the way he puts his observations into his work, the rustic charm, the poignant ethos sprinkled with a dash of cynicism. The artist works with a variety of media, like large-scale sculpture installations, painting, video art, and photography. His visual language remains bold which refers to the European and Asian artistic traditions. Kallat also sometimes combines different medias to create an impactful visual experience. The exhibition will be on view through October 27, 2017, at Galerie Templon, Veydtstraat 13A, 1060 Brussels.
