Cheim & Read is hosting an exhibition “Milton Resnick: Boards 1981–1984” at the gallery’s New York location. The exhibition brings together a selection of works from the 1908s by the Ukraine-born artist Milton Resnick (1917- 2004), known for his super-heavy abstract paintings that at times amounted more than 300 pounds of pigments. The artist escaped into the United States from the Civil War-torn Bratslav in 1922, and studied commercial art at Pratt Institute and later focused on painting at American Artists School, before he was drafted to the US Army during the World War II. Post war, he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under the GI Bill, and achieved the accolades from the art world as the youngest member of the first-generation Abstract Expressionists. In 1981, Resnick started working on a stack of 140 boards, each measuring at 40 by 30 inches, terming them as his “studio paintings.” The show, bringing the works by the artist for the third time since winning the right for his estate’s exclusive representation in 2006, will showcase these thickly painted, mostly monochromatic paintings on wax-impregnated, corrugated boards. The exhibition is on view through March 31, 2018, at Cheim & Read, 547 West 25th Street, New York, NY 10001, USA.For details, visit http://admin.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/cheim-read/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
