Opera Gallery presents “Splendid Stars”, first solo exhibition of renowned Korean artist Cho Sung-Hee in London. Cho Sung-Hee’s oeuvre showcases a balance of opposites on the canvas, combining Korean Hanji paper, a traditional material, with oil paint which affects the viewers with their sheer beauty and mesmerizing effect. Each Hanji paper is torn, shaped and painted by hand, which is then arranged on canvas in such a way, that the surface appears to be void. Her works, inspired by nature and our world, are intricately designed with different colours and surfaces. Her subjects also suggest keen integrity with nature:  blossoms of flowers, the cosmic world or the vastness of the universe. The title of this exhibition is attributed to the artist’s name: whereas Sung-Hee means ‘stars’ (Sung) and ‘splendour’ (Hee). Sung-Hee has extended the use of Korean mulberry paper Hanji- which has been in use by the artists since 1980s. When dipped in water, mulberry paper can be shaped into any form.  With her keen sensibility to sculpture, Cho Sung-Hee used mulberry paper for reflection of life and vastness of nature. Her work shows the infinite number of the stars above; the still surface of a pond covered with endless lotus leaves; or a vast field, beautified with flowery clovers. Life in the Galaxy (2012) and Floating Sun (2012) are remarkable among her recent series. Using deep blue, black and red as her main palette, she presents ‘the world of deep silence and that of limitless labyrinth’. Cho’s more recent work Reflection (2014) represents the metaphor of life. Emptiness or ’Sunyata’ as in the Asian context, is a main theme of Sung-Hee’s work.Sung-Hee Cho was born in 1949. She did her B.A from College of Fine Arts, Hong-Ik University and studied at Pratt Institute of Art, New York and Art Institute of Chicago.“Splendid Stars” is being presented from March 9, 2018 through March 30, at Opera Gallery London, 134 New Bond St, Mayfair, London W1S 2TF, UK.For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/opera-gallery/overviewClick on the slide show to have a sneak peek of the artist’s work.
