Galerie Neu is hosting “Private Lives,” the second solo exhibition by renowned American painter and video artist Alex Hubbard in Berlin. For the exhibition, Hubbard uses both the art forms of painting and video art in a perfect assimilation, in a way that the performative process becomes evident with the physicality of the paintings itself. At the center of the gallery space there are three large-format paintings showcased that are created by layers of pigmented urethane, mixed with fiber-glass. Beneath it all, there is a layer of stencil drawings which has been washed-out by layers of synthetic materials. The remnants create a unique composition with different colors, and depths. Along with the large paintings, there are four small-scale cabinet pieces exhibited in the show, which are mixtures of painting and sculpture as much as they are the melting point for physicality into abstraction. There are shadow boxes which show paintings, partly hidden behind semi-drawn curtains. Framed in the shape and color of outdated wall paper, they are both abstract and representational. They represent the domesticity of Hubbard’s bar paintings and they are quite intimate in nature. This exhibition gives the viewers and excellent opportunity to explore the question of abstraction and mastery of painting.Alex Hubbard was born in 1975 in Tolego, Oregon, and lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art and completed the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York in 2003. His work has been showcased in many solo exhibitions including the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, US (2014); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, US (2012); Kunsthalle Berlin, Berlin, Germany (2010); and Mercer Union — Centre for Contemporary Visual Art, Toronto, Canada (2010).
